Arachne's Web 6.0.0
Hello and welcome to the 6th iteration of Meringue Mountain University's Technology Blog. This blog is open to all students and staff and its highly recommended that they check it often. I welcome all users to leave comments, complaints, or songs of praise. Contained within this blog, you will find tidbits such as:
- Technology related updates and how they impact you
- News about the networks and PCs on campus
- Information on upcoming Game Nights (See below)
- Other random things that may benefit your lives
This first post only covers broad topics and information you may need before the school year begins.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
MMU's Information Technology Policy
Newsflash! MMU has an Information Technology Policy which each of you need to read and sign before you get access to the school network. I know its a lot to read and most of you are brainless slackers who will just sign your names at the bottom of the page and click "I Accept" but you really should read the entire policy. I didn't write it for shits and giggles. You may want to pay particular attention to the section labeled Consequences for Policy Violations as the year hasn't even officially started and we've already had quite a few offences.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
EMAIL
I’ve harped on this more times that I can remember but were still having problems with storage on our email server. Somnium has a lot of students and a fair amount of staff too. Each person is allotted 1gig of space for their messages (Inbox, Sent, Deleted, Spam, and Archived.) The average text based email is only 5-15 kb. There is no reason for your email boxes to be nearing the full capacity. Here are some things you can do to cut down on your email size.
- Get a Gmail account. Its free and they give you 7-8 gigs worth of space
- Empty your Deleted Items and Spam folders regularly.
- Empty your Inbox and Sent Items folders annually.
- Save your porn to your computer then delete the email.
If you use your school email address to sign up for newsletters or updates, remember that they can pile up if you don’t delete or archive them. See suggestion 1 and maybe use that email account for newsletters. Also, if you use your school email address to sign up for things online, chances are you’re going to get Spam mail…Even if you don’t use your school email, it is your responsibility to check it regularly or have the mail forwarded to another account.
If your email box is nearing capacity, you will receive a message from me sometime today. In the event your box is full, you will be receiving an unpleasant phone call from me instead. I’m going to give everyone a week to clean up their email. If, after that time, I find any users whose boxes are near capacity, they will find that all their messages have been purged.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Game Nights!
As usual, and unless otherwise noted, all game nights are held in the Student Union from 8pm to whenever the last person passes out or security kicks us out. Signups are only required for the Friday tournaments. Free play will be available after the tournament and observers are always welcome. All game nights/tournaments are free and open to all students and staff. Some food and beverages will be provided, but feel free to bring your own. Please contact me or leave a comment if you would like more information
More information on Game Nights will follow in subsequent blog posts.
We could always use more consoles / tv’s

Arachne's Web 6.0.1
Welcome one and all to this week’s installment of MMU related technology news. Short update this week, so lets dive into it.
XioFax9 is currently playing: GTA4: The Ballad of Gay Tony, Alice: Madness Returns, You Don't Know Jack, Starcraft 2, Mortal Kombat
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Virus Alert Emails
There have been a rash of ‘Look out for this Virus!’ and ‘Do this to protect your PC from so and so Virus!’ emails being passed around lately. Chances are they’re malicious or will give you a virus when you try to read their attachments.
Please, I’m begging you, just delete these emails when you get them. DO NOT FORWARD THE EMAIL TO EVERY PERSON IN THE SCHOOL ADDRESS BOOK!
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Email Boxes
So……how many of you actually did like I asked and cleaned out your email boxes? No wait, I know the answer to that already. And if you’re one of those people who chose to ignore me, all I can say is I hope you didn’t have anything of great importance in your boxes. Its gone now…

Game Nights!
Standings from last week’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Tournament: 1st: Nth Division 2nd: XioFax9 3nd: 3at_Me
Nth Division, wonderful playing against you, as always.
Upcoming Game Nights/Tournaments: Monday: Mario Kart Wii (Wii) Wednesday: Call of Duty: Black Ops (Xbox 360/PS3/PC) Friday: Rock Band 3 (Xbox 360/PS3)
There will be both band and solo tournaments, divided by difficulty level. Songs will be chosen from the medium-hard to extreme difficulty levels. Solo tournament will be for GUITAR ONLY.
I'm in the process of planning the 3rd annual Doom Day. Doom Day has been a huge success for the last two years and I hope to keep the trend going. Expect more news next week.
I’m also in talks with the Dean to have some sort of prizes or a trophy for the tournaments. If there are any suggestions, please leave a comment or drop me an email.
We could always use more consoles / tv’s

Pellets
Scheduled Network Maintenance this Tuesday from 1:00am to 4:00am. The external network will be down at this time. Internal network should still be operational.

I'm really good at Angry Birds. Can you hold an Angry Birds tournament? I could totally win prizes.

Well, I'm not sure how to have an Angry Birds tournament, but I'll see what I can come up with. If you want to just come by sometime, there's always a couple people playing AB between rounds.
Also, it'd be possible to have a double solitaire tournament or we've done Nerds tournaments on Classic Gaming days in the past, if you know how to play. If not, its kinda like team solitaire crossed with speed.

Klondike is what you probably play on the computer. Window's default Solitaire game. Its really called Klondike Solitaire.
